Can an Interior Designer Help with Just Planning (No Execution)?
4 June 2026 · 4 min read
The answer is yes, and I'd argue it's one of the most underused options in residential interior design. A lot of homeowners assume you either hire a designer for the whole project or you do everything yourself. There's a very useful middle ground. For more on how we structure design-only vs. full execution, see our services page.
What Design-Only Actually Delivers
When you hire us for design-only, here's what you receive at the end of the engagement:
- AutoCAD floor plan — to-scale furniture layout and spatial planning
- Electrical and lighting layout — switch positions, circuit planning, light placements
- False ceiling layout — with lighting integration
- 3D photorealistic renders — for all rooms, so you can visualise exactly what you're building
- Detailed Bill of Quantities (BOQ) — room by room, material by material
- Materials and finishes schedule — exactly what tiles, laminates, paints, hardware
- Vendor list — who to approach for each category in Pune
That's a complete design package. You can walk into any contractor's office with these documents and get an accurate execution quote. Multiple quotes, in fact — which gives you cost leverage that you simply don't have if you're going to the contractor without documentation.
Who It Works Best For
People with a trusted contractor. If you have a carpenter or contractor you've worked with before and trust, you don't need us to supervise them. Give them our drawings and specifications. They execute. You save on project management cost.
Renovation projects. You're not building from scratch — you're updating a kitchen or redesigning a living room. Design-only gives you a plan without the overhead of full execution management.
Value-conscious clients. You want professional design thinking — spatial planning, material selection, 3D visualisation — but you're comfortable managing the execution yourself or through your own contacts.
The Handoff to Contractors
This is where design-only either works beautifully or falls short, and it depends on the quality of the documentation. Our BOQ is line-item specific: not "wood finish for kitchen" but "18mm BWR ply with Merino laminate shade 2463, Hettich soft-close hinges, 3mm edge banding." When the specification is that detailed, there's very little room for the contractor to substitute or cut corners without it being immediately visible.
What Can Go Wrong (And How to Manage It)
Without execution supervision, the main risk is material substitution — contractor uses a cheaper material than specified because you're not checking. The mitigation: ask for material samples before installation begins, compare against the specification sheet we provide, and do random site checks at key milestones.
Is it more work for you? Yes. Is it worth the cost saving? Usually — yes.
Cost
Design-only for a 2-3BHK: ₹1 lakh to ₹3.5 lakhs depending on scope, size, and complexity. That's the whole fee. No hidden execution markups, no material commissions.
Design-only is underrated and underused. If you have a reasonable contractor and want professional design thinking, it's the best value in the industry. Read our guide on what's included in a designer's fee to understand the full breakdown.
