Kitchen Interior Design Cost in Pune — 2026 Guide

The Kitchen Question Everyone Gets Wrong

Most people walk into an interior design conversation thinking "how much for the whole flat?" but the kitchen is the single most important thing to get right — and the one where the cost variation is widest.

I've seen kitchens in Pune flats done for ₹1.8 lakh and I've done kitchens for ₹7 lakh. Both can look good in renders. The difference shows up at the two-year mark when the cheap one starts chipping, the shutters start sagging, and the soft-close hinges stop closing softly.

This is everything you need to understand about kitchen interior design cost in Pune before you start.

Modular vs Carpenter-Made: The Core Decision

This is the most common question I get asked, and it doesn't have a single answer.

Modular kitchens are factory-made units — carcasses (the inner box structure), shutters (the faces you see), and fittings assembled from manufactured parts. The quality of the manufacturer matters enormously. A Häfele-fitted Sleek kitchen is not the same category as a local modular kitchen shop in Hadapsar.

Carpenter-made kitchens are built on-site by a carpenter, using local plywood and shutters. The quality is entirely a function of the carpenter's skill and the materials you specify. A good carpenter with BWP marine ply and good shutters can make a very serviceable kitchen. A bad carpenter with MR-grade ply is a problem waiting to happen — especially in Pune's humidity range.

My general position: For most 2 BHK and 3 BHK clients in Pune, a mid-range modular kitchen gives more consistent quality at a predictable price than carpenter work. Carpenter kitchens make sense for unusual layouts (island kitchens, corner units, very large footprints) where standard modular sizing doesn't work.

The Real Cost Breakdown

Carcass Material

The inner box of every kitchen unit is either:

  • BWP (Boiling Water Proof) plywood — the correct choice. More expensive but moisture-resistant.
  • HDF (High Density Fibre) — used in many lower-tier modular kitchens. Swells near water if the kitchen is not perfectly sealed.
  • MR (Moisture Resistant) ply — middle ground, often used in carpenter kitchens.

If your modular kitchen quote doesn't specify carcass material, ask. If it says HDF, know what you're getting.

Shutter Materials and What They Cost

FinishPrice Range (per sq ft)Best For
Foil / membrane₹350–₹550Budget kitchens
Acrylic₹550–₹850Mid-range, good gloss
PU (Polyurethane)₹700–₹1,100Durable mid-premium
Lacquered glass₹900–₹1,400Premium, easy to clean
Veneer₹800–₹1,300Natural wood look

For a standard L-shape Pune kitchen (approximately 35–45 sq ft of shutter area), this gives you:

  • Acrylic: ₹1.9L–₹3.8L for shutters alone
  • PU: ₹2.5L–₹5L
  • Lacquered glass: ₹3.2L–₹6.3L

Add 40–60% for carcass, fittings, and installation to get total kitchen cost.

Hardware: The Hidden Differentiator

The hinges, drawer channels, and lift mechanisms are where cheap kitchens fail early. The main hardware brands in India:

  • Hettich (German brand, most common mid-range) — reliable, good after-sales
  • Häfele (German, slightly premium) — excellent quality
  • Blum (Austrian, premium) — the smoothest mechanisms, significant price premium
  • Ebco (Indian) — budget tier, adequate for basic needs

I specify Hettich or Häfele for almost all my Pune projects at the mid-range price point. Blum only when the client has specifically chosen it or when the kitchen is high-end.

Countertops

  • Granite (Indian): ₹120–₹200 per sq ft — durable, local stone, plenty of colour options
  • Quartz (engineered stone): ₹250–₹550 per sq ft — consistent pattern, non-porous, lower maintenance
  • Marble: ₹200–₹600+ per sq ft — beautiful but needs sealing and care
  • Ceramic/porcelain tile: ₹80–₹150 per sq ft — budget option, visible grout lines

For most Pune kitchens, I recommend Indian granite for the main countertop and a small quartz or granite backsplash. Quartz is gaining popularity but the jump in cost over granite isn't always justified.

What Makes Pune Kitchens Different

A few things I notice in every Pune kitchen project:

Space constraints are real. Most 2 BHK kitchens in Pune are 60–90 sq ft — smaller than clients imagine. The design has to work hard in a small footprint. Tall units (up to ceiling) help with storage enormously.

Ventilation matters. Pune's kitchens often have smaller windows than kitchens in older Mumbai buildings. Chimney placement and cross-ventilation planning is part of the design process.

Builder-provided counter tiles. Many new possessions in Undri, Kharadi, and Hadapsar come with builder-installed floor tiles in the kitchen area — often decent quality. Factor in whether you're retiling or working with what's there.

Plumbing position is often fixed. In apartment buildings, the kitchen drain and water inlet positions are structural and can't usually be moved without significant cost. Design around them.

Questions to Ask Before You Sign

1. What is the carcass material? (BWP vs HDF vs MR ply)

2. Which hardware brand are the hinges and drawer channels?

3. Is the countertop included, and what material?

4. What is the shutter warranty?

5. Who does the installation — in-house or third party?

6. Is the chimney and hob included or separate?

The answers to these six questions will tell you almost everything about whether a quote is genuinely competitive or just cheap.

How Aura Foundry Approaches Kitchen Design

Every kitchen we do starts with a detailed brief — how you cook, whether it's one person or a family, how much storage you actually need versus how much you think you need. Then we do a layout that works functionally, not just aesthetically.

Our services page explains the full process. If you want to discuss your kitchen specifically, get in touch and I'll review your floor plan.
