Can Interior Designers Help with Small Spaces and Apartments?

I've designed 1BHKs in Pune that feel more spacious than 3BHKs I've walked into. The size of the flat is less important than the quality of the decisions made for it. For a full design process overview that applies equally to small and large flats, visit our services page. Here's how we approach small apartments.

Vertical Storage: Stop Thinking Horizontally

Most people plan storage to waist height. Wardrobes at 6 feet. Kitchen cabinets at 3 feet. In a small flat, this is expensive floor space wasted.

Floor-to-ceiling wardrobes use the same footprint but give you 40-50% more storage volume. The visual effect is also better — the room reads as taller. The cost difference from a standard wardrobe to a ceiling-height wardrobe is typically ₹15,000-₹25,000 — the best return-on-investment in small-space design.

Overhead kitchen cabinets to ceiling — most kitchens in Pune builder flats have a gap between the upper cabinets and the ceiling. That gap is dead space. It can hold appliances, seasonal items, or be closed off with shutters for a cleaner look.

Continuous Flooring for Visual Expansion

This is a trick that sounds subtle but makes an enormous difference. Using the same flooring material throughout — no thresholds, no level changes, no transition strips — makes the flat read as a single continuous space rather than a series of small rooms.

In a 650 sqft flat, a single large-format tile (800x800 or 600x1200) laid consistently through all rooms creates a sense of flow that makes the total area feel larger than it is. Avoid the common Pune pattern of different tiles in every room — it fragments the visual space.

Multi-Function Furniture

A 2-seater dining table that extends to 4. A sofa with under-seat storage. A study unit that doubles as a guest bed. These are not compromises — they're design decisions. The right custom carpenter can build furniture that does exactly what your life requires.

The mistake is buying standard furniture that almost fits. Custom carpentry in a small flat almost always outperforms ready-made because the dimensions can be exact to the centimetre.

Light Management

Small rooms feel smaller when they're dark. Strategies that work:

  • Mirrors on one full wall in bedroom or living area — not just decorative, actually reflective of the room's depth
  • Light tones on walls — not necessarily white, but mid-tones rather than deep colours
  • Avoiding heavy window treatments — sheer curtains that let light through, or curtains that stack to one side rather than blocking half the window

Natural light in a small flat is your most valuable asset. Don't block it.

Why 3D Renders Are More Valuable in Small Spaces

Read our detailed guide on why 3D renders save homeowners lakhs — the principles apply even more strongly in compact flats.

In a large flat, a scale mistake — say, a sofa 30cm too wide — creates a mild inconvenience. In a 650 sqft flat, the same mistake might mean you can't open the main door properly. Getting scale right before execution is critical, and renders let you catch those problems at ₹25,000 rather than at ₹1,00,000 after the furniture is delivered.

What NOT to Do

  • Dark accent walls in small rooms — they visually reduce the room size
  • Heavy furniture with legs to the floor — furniture raised on legs allows light to pass underneath and reads as lighter
  • Too many different materials — wood here, metal there, stone somewhere else — fragments the visual space
  • Multiple small rugs — one rug or none; multiple rugs in a small room create visual clutter

Typical Cost for a Well-Designed 1BHK (650 sqft)

Complete design and execution: ₹5 lakhs to ₹9 lakhs depending on material choices. The design fee alone is ₹75,000 to ₹1.25 lakhs. Money very well spent.
