Can a Designer Help with Wardrobe and Storage Solutions?

5 June 2026 · 6 min read

The number one complaint I hear from homeowners two years after moving in is not about the living room aesthetics or the kitchen finish. It's always storage. Either there isn't enough, or what exists is poorly organised and unusable. This is entirely preventable with good design thinking at the right stage. Use our free budget estimator to factor wardrobe and storage costs into your overall budget.

Floor-to-Ceiling Wardrobes: Start Here

Most builder-fit wardrobes in Pune apartments are 6 to 7 feet tall. Standard ceiling heights are 9 to 10 feet. That gap above the wardrobe is pure waste — visually and functionally.

Floor-to-ceiling wardrobes use the same floor footprint but give you 40-50% more storage volume. The visual effect is also significant: the room reads as taller, the wardrobe looks considered rather than builder-standard, and the space between furniture and ceiling doesn't collect dust.

The cost difference from a standard-height wardrobe to ceiling height? Roughly ₹15,000-₹25,000 for a full-bedroom wardrobe. For the storage gain and visual impact, it's the best value decision in a bedroom.

Internal Fittings: What's Actually Worth Paying For

Here's an honest breakdown:

Worth every rupee:

  • Soft-close hinges (Hettich/Blum) — you'll interact with these 10 times a day. The difference between a soft-close and a standard hinge is the difference between satisfying and irritating, for years.
  • Full-extension drawer slides — drawers that open fully allow access to the back. Standard slides don't, so the back third of every drawer is effectively dead space.
  • Pull-out trouser rack — if you own more than 10 pairs of trousers, this pays for itself in convenience immediately.

Not worth the premium for most clients:

  • Motorised lifts — beautiful in a showroom, rarely used in daily life
  • Pull-down hanging rails — useful only if your ceilings are above 10 feet
  • Corner carousels — mechanisms fail, and the space efficiency isn't as dramatic as manufacturers claim

Under-Bed Storage in Pune Apartments

In a 1BHK or 2BHK where every square foot counts, the under-bed zone is often the largest unused storage volume in the flat. A custom bed with hydraulic storage lifts (not just side drawers) gives you 15-25 cubic feet of accessible, clean storage.

Good for: seasonal clothing, extra bedding, luggage. This one decision can eliminate the need for an additional storage unit.

The TV Unit as Storage — An Underused Opportunity

Most TV units in Pune flats store the TV and nothing else useful. A well-designed TV unit that spans the full wall can store: set-top boxes and cables (hidden, organised), books, board games, bar accessories, extra cushions, children's toys. The key is designing the storage mix upfront rather than after.

Hardware: Why Hettich or Blum vs No-Name Matters

I hear "all hinges are the same" from clients who've never had a Hettich soft-close fail in year one while their no-name hinges are squeaking and dropping out of alignment. See our modular kitchen guide for the same hardware advice applied to kitchens. The price difference on hardware for a full 3BHK is ₹25,000-₹40,000. The quality difference is a decade of daily frustration vs daily satisfaction. This is not a place to save money.

Wardrobe Cost Ranges by Finish (2026, Pune)

FinishCost per sqft (supply + install)
Laminate (standard)₹800 – ₹1,200
Acrylic₹1,200 – ₹1,800
PU (Polyurethane)₹1,800 – ₹2,500

These are rates for carpentry supply and installation. Hardware (hinges, slides, handles) is additional and should be budgeted separately based on the fittings chosen.
