6 Decisions That Define a Dining Room

Table size dictates everything else

The dining table size determines chandelier position, chair clearance, and the effective room size needed. Rule of thumb for Pune apartments: you need 90 cm of clearance on all sides of the table for chairs to be pulled out comfortably. A 6-seater dining table (180×90 cm) needs a room of at least 360×270 cm clear. A 4-seater (140×80 cm) needs 320×260 cm. Design the room around the table you actually want — not the other way around.

Chandelier height is the most common mistake

The bottom of a chandelier over a dining table should hang 70–80 cm above the table surface for a standard 2.8 m ceiling — not flush with the ceiling, and not so low it becomes an obstacle. In rooms with higher ceilings (3 m+), adjust proportionally. A chandelier hung too high loses its intimacy and looks like a ceiling fitting from below. Too low, and it blocks sightlines across the table. The rough formula: ceiling height (cm) minus 200 cm = bottom of chandelier from floor.

Open vs. closed kitchen connection

An open kitchen connected to the dining area (the most common layout in Pune 2 BHK and 3 BHK apartments) means cooking smells, noise, and clutter are visible from the dining space. Design response: a tall breakfast counter or a low partition separating the two zones, a strong chimney above the hob, and ensuring the kitchen is finished to the same visual standard as the dining area. A closed kitchen with a pass-through or window is less common but gives a cleaner dining environment.

Crockery unit: what actually fits and gets used

The most useful crockery unit is one designed around what the family actually owns and uses. Before designing, list the contents: dinner sets, glassware, serving bowls, bar items, table linen, and any display items. A crockery unit designed for a 6-piece dinner set and six glasses will be full in six months. Design it with 30% future capacity, closed lower cabinets for less-used items, and open or glass-front upper shelving for display. Standard unit depth: 35–40 cm. Depth matters for dinner plates (25–28 cm diameter).

Lighting layers — not just a chandelier

A well-lit dining room has three layers: the chandelier or pendant over the table (the statement piece), downlights or recessed LEDs in the ceiling for general illumination, and accent lighting inside the crockery unit or along the feature wall. The chandelier should be on a dimmer — dining at full overhead brightness is uncomfortable. Warm white (2700–3000K) throughout. Never cool white in a dining space — it makes food look clinical and kills the atmosphere.

Bar unit: when it makes sense and when it doesn't

A bar unit or wine display integrated into the dining room is increasingly popular in Pune 3 BHK and 4 BHK homes. It makes sense when: the homeowner entertains regularly, there is enough wall space without it crowding the dining area, and the budget supports it (₹80K–₹2L for a well-made bar unit). It doesn't make sense when: the dining area is already compact, or when a buffet sideboard would provide more practical daily utility. Decide this in the brief before designing — retrofitting a bar unit after joinery is complete is expensive.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does dining room interior design cost in Pune?+

Dining room design in Pune costs ₹80,000–₹1,50,000 for a basic fit-out (pendant light, false ceiling continuation, sideboard). A mid-range dining room with a crockery unit, chandelier, feature wall, and loose furniture runs ₹1.5L–₹3.5L. Premium with custom marble dining table, wine display wall, and detailed ceiling: ₹3.5L–₹7L. Luxury formal dining rooms in villas and penthouses start at ₹7L and go significantly higher.

What size dining table should I get for a Pune 2 BHK?+

Most Pune 2 BHK dining areas are 120–160 sq ft (11–15 sq m). A 4-seater table (120–140 cm × 75–80 cm) is the maximum comfortable size for most 2 BHKs. A 6-seater (160–180 cm × 80–90 cm) can work if the dining area is dedicated and not passing through to the kitchen. Never buy a table before measuring with 90 cm clearance on all sides — many Pune homeowners end up with dining tables that leave chairs touching the wall when pulled out.

Should the dining room have a separate false ceiling from the living room?+

In most Pune open-plan living-dining layouts, a separate false ceiling level or detail in the dining zone creates a sense of defined space without building a wall. Options: a slightly lower ceiling panel over the dining table only (creating a canopy effect), a different ceiling material (timber battens vs. gypsum in the living room), or a perimeter cove that frames just the dining area. This visual separation makes the space feel more intentional — particularly important in open-plan apartments where dining and living blur into one.

What is the right height for a dining chandelier?+

The bottom of the chandelier should hang 70–80 cm above the dining table surface in a standard room (2.7–3 m ceiling). Higher ceilings: add 5 cm for every 30 cm of additional ceiling height. The chandelier diameter should be roughly half the table length for a round table, or one-third the table length for a rectangular table — so a 180 cm table suits a 50–60 cm wide pendant. Get this wrong and the chandelier either floats at ceiling level (looks wrong from the side) or blocks sightlines across the table.

Can a dining room be designed as part of a full home project or separately?+

Both are possible. In a full home project, the dining room is designed as part of the overall brief — ensuring the materials, ceiling design, and joinery are consistent with the living room and kitchen. A standalone dining room project (just the dining area) typically costs ₹1.5L–₹4.5L and involves: crockery unit, pendant or chandelier, feature wall, and sometimes a dining table and chair set. The limitation of a standalone dining project is that it may not match the rest of the home perfectly — a full home brief avoids this.

Do you include dining furniture in the design?+

Yes — the dining table and chair selection is part of every dining room design at Aura Foundry. We specify the table shape, material, size, and chair style to complement the joinery and ceiling design, and source from Pune's furniture vendors or recommend custom fabrication for premium projects. The dining furniture appears in the 3D render — you see the exact combination before any purchase is made. Custom dining tables (marble top, solid wood, or mixed material) are fabricated as part of the joinery scope for premium and luxury projects.
