False Ceiling Design Pune

Cove lighting, recessed downlights, AC slots, and wood panels. False ceiling designed as a lighting system first — with 3D renders before a single board is fixed.

Discuss Your CeilingEstimate Budget

Quick answer: False ceiling installation in Pune costs ₹80–₹160/sq ft for a standard gypsum board ceiling, ₹150–₹220/sq ft for a cove ceiling with LED lighting, and ₹250–₹400/sq ft for wood or MDF panels. For a typical 2 BHK living room (280 sq ft), a mid-range cove ceiling with lighting runs ₹45,000–₹65,000 fully installed. Pune 2026 rates.

Aura Foundry designs false ceilings as lighting systems — cove positions, downlight placement, AC slot, fan point, and any feature panels are all resolved in 3D before a board is touched. The ceiling and the lighting are designed together. What you approve in the render is exactly what gets installed.

What We Resolve Before the First Board Goes Up

A false ceiling installed without resolving these six things first will need to be partially demolished within a year. We settle them all in the design phase.

Room Height First — Everything Else Follows

False ceilings work best when the slab height is 10 feet or more. At 9 feet, a false ceiling drops the room to 8 feet 2 inches — functional but not generous. At 8.5-foot slab heights (common in older Pune buildings), false ceilings need to be shallow — a cove at the perimeter only, or a feature panel behind the sofa or bed rather than a full-room ceiling. We assess height before recommending any ceiling type.

Lighting Integration — This Is Why You Do a False Ceiling

The real reason for a false ceiling is lighting control. Cove lighting (LED strip behind a stepped border) creates ambient glow with no visible source. Recessed downlights replace a single overhead bulb with multiple focused points. A false ceiling lets you put light exactly where you want it — over the dining table, at the wardrobe, behind the sofa, above the bed. Designed correctly, the ceiling becomes the most powerful design element in any room.

AC Slot — Design This Before You Board

In most Pune flats, the split AC is mounted after the false ceiling is installed — and the result is a poorly placed AC unit fighting with the ceiling aesthetics. The right approach: decide where the AC goes, create a dedicated slot or reveal in the false ceiling design, and route the refrigerant pipe and condensate drain inside the ceiling before boarding. The AC sits flush, the drain is concealed, and the ceiling looks intentional.

POP vs Gypsum — The Real Difference

POP (plaster of paris) is applied wet and can be moulded into curved or decorative profiles — cornices, medallions, stepped borders. It takes skill and time to apply and is prone to cracking in Pune's temperature swings. Gypsum board (plasterboard) is screwed to a metal framework, dries uniformly, and is faster to install. For straight-line modern ceilings, gypsum is more reliable. For curved or ornate profiles, POP is the right choice. Most of our projects combine both.

The Infrastructure Goes in First

False ceiling is an infrastructure project as much as a design project. Before a single board is fixed: all electrical wiring for downlights, cove strip, AC point, fan point, and speaker cables must be laid in conduit. Any leakage from the slab or bathroom above must be fixed. Any mechanical (HVAC, exhaust) routing must be done. Skipping this sequence and adding lights after boarding means hacking the new ceiling — which always shows.

Wet Areas Need Moisture-Resistant Materials

Bathrooms and kitchens need either moisture-resistant (MR) gypsum board or calcium silicate board for false ceilings — regular gypsum will sag and stain within months. PVC ceiling panels are a common bathroom option in Pune and are serviceable at ₹40–₹80/sq ft, but they look cheap against a well-finished bathroom. Moisture-resistant gypsum with a semi-gloss paint finish is our standard recommendation for bathrooms with good ventilation.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does false ceiling cost in Pune in 2026?+

A standard gypsum board flat ceiling costs ₹80–₹160/sq ft including framework, boarding, and paint. A cove ceiling with LED lighting runs ₹150–₹220/sq ft. A wood or MDF panel ceiling is ₹250–₹400/sq ft. For a typical 2 BHK living room (280 sq ft), a mid-range cove ceiling with lighting costs ₹45,000–₹65,000 fully installed. These are 2026 Pune market rates including labour.

How much height does a false ceiling take?+

A standard gypsum false ceiling with a flat profile takes 4–5 inches from the slab. A cove ceiling (stepped border with recessed layer) takes 8–10 inches at the perimeter and 4–5 inches in the centre. So a 10-foot slab becomes a 9-foot 2-inch to 9-foot 4-inch finished ceiling — comfortable. A 9-foot slab becomes 8 feet 2 inches to 8 feet 4 inches, which is the practical minimum for a full false ceiling.

Which is better — POP or gypsum board false ceiling?+

For modern flat or stepped ceilings, gypsum board is more reliable: faster installation, more uniform finish, and less prone to cracking. For curved profiles, cornices, medallions, or ornate colonial-style ceilings, POP is the right choice since it can be moulded. Most Pune homes currently choose gypsum for the main ceiling field and use POP only for decorative borders or corbels. Both take the same paint and look identical from the floor once finished.

Can I add a false ceiling to an existing home without a renovation?+

Yes, but with caveats. In an existing home, wiring changes require opening walls or chasing new conduits through the ceiling before boarding — this creates dust and debris equivalent to a partial renovation. If your existing electrical points are adequate and you just want a ceiling for aesthetics (no new lights or AC slot), installation is relatively clean. For any project involving new downlights, cove lighting, or AC slots, plan for 5–7 days of messy work before the clean finish.

Do I need a false ceiling in every room?+

No — and over-designing the ceiling is a common mistake. The living room and master bedroom benefit most from false ceiling work because they are the rooms where you spend time looking up. The kitchen typically needs only an AC slot and a few downlights, which can be surface-mounted without a full false ceiling. Bathrooms with adequate ventilation can use a simple MR gypsum panel. Secondary bedrooms can often use a POP border with a central fan point and skip the full ceiling entirely.

How long does false ceiling installation take?+

For a 2 BHK (living room + 2 bedrooms), a full false ceiling installation takes 7–12 days: 1–2 days for wiring, 2–3 days for framework, 2–3 days for boarding, 2–3 days for plastering and finishing, then paint as part of the general painting phase. It runs alongside other carpentry work in a full project, so it is rarely on the critical path. As a standalone ceiling-only project in an existing home, budget 10–14 days.
