Red Flags to Watch For When Hiring an Interior Designer in Pune

7 June 2026 · 5 min read

I've heard enough post-project horror stories from Pune homeowners to know that most bad design experiences were predictable. The warning signs were there before signing — they just weren't recognised. Also see our guide on how to choose the right interior designer in Pune for the full positive framework. Here they are, clearly.

1. Only Shows Renders, No Finished Project Photos

If a designer's entire portfolio is renders with no completed project photography, they either have no completed projects or they don't want you to see them. Either is a problem. Always ask for finished project photos.

2. Can't Tell You Who Will Handle Your Project

"Our team will take care of you" is not an answer. Find out: who specifically draws your plans, who visits your site, who you call when there's a problem. If the answer is unclear or keeps shifting, the project management structure doesn't exist.

3. Quotes Without Seeing the Space

Any designer who gives you a price for your flat without visiting it is not designing your flat — they're selling you a package. Accurate scoping requires seeing the space: understanding ceiling heights, window positions, existing services, site access. A quote before a visit is a guess dressed as a number.

4. Asks for Large Deposit Before Showing Design Work

Reasonable: a small booking fee after seeing a portfolio. Unreasonable: 30-50% upfront before any design work is shown. A designer who needs your money before demonstrating their thinking has a cash flow problem, not a design problem. You're being asked to fund it.

5. Agrees With Everything You Say

A designer with no opinions has no design thinking. If someone's response to every idea you suggest is "yes, absolutely, we can do that" — they're not designing your home, they're executing your instructions. You could hire a contractor for that. The value of a designer is the perspective they bring.

6. Vague or Verbal-Only Scope of Work

If the scope of work exists only as conversation and not as a written document, you have no basis for evaluating whether the project is complete. Scope creep, cost disputes, and disagreements about what was included all trace back to this one failure.

7. Quote Significantly Below Everyone Else

When one quote is 30-40% below every other quote for the same scope, something is being excluded. Either the material quality is lower, the site visits are fewer, the project management is thinner, or the estimate is optimistic in ways that will become expensive surprises. Get itemised breakdowns and understand what's different.

8. Reluctant to Give References or Let You Speak to Past Clients

A designer proud of their work wants you to talk to past clients. Reluctance or delay means there's something they'd rather you not hear. Ask for three references and actually call them.

9. No Written Contract or Rushed Signing

A designer who says "don't worry, we work on trust" or pushes you to sign without adequate time to read the contract is protecting themselves, not the relationship. Read every contract. Ask about every clause you don't understand.

10. No Process for Handling Mid-Project Changes

Ask directly: "What happens if I want to change something after execution starts?" If there's no clear answer — no change order process, no written approval requirement — you'll find out what happens the hard way when costs accumulate without documentation. Read our guide on how designers handle changes during a project for what good looks like.
