What Goes Into a Well-Designed Kitchen
A modular kitchen is one of the highest-cost, highest-use items in any home. These are the six decisions that separate a kitchen that works from one that only looks good.
Layout and Triangle First
The cooktop-to-sink-to-fridge triangle is the foundation of a functional kitchen. In a Pune apartment, the typical L-shaped layout allows a natural triangle if the positions are designed, not defaulted to. We fix the triangle in the floor plan before any shutter or counter decision is made. A beautiful kitchen with a broken workflow is a beautiful inconvenience.
Hardware — Where Not to Compromise
No-name drawer channels and hinges fail within 2–3 years and cannot be individually replaced without redoing the whole unit. Hettich (standard specification) and Blum (premium specification) hardware carries a 10-year guarantee and is serviceable. We specify the brand and model number of every fitting in the written BOQ — not just "quality hardware".
Shutter Material and Finish
The four common shutter materials in Pune: acrylic (glossy, fingerprint-prone, premium look), membrane/PVC (budget, matt, not ideal for high-heat zones), laminate (mid-range, durable, wide colour range), and lacquer (premium, painted finish, deepest colour options). We match the shutter material to the kitchen orientation, usage, and the rest of the flat palette. A south-facing kitchen with direct afternoon sun should not have dark acrylic shutters.
Countertop — Quartz vs Granite vs Marble
Quartz is the standard specification for Pune kitchens: non-porous, consistent colour, low maintenance, ₹350–₹900 per sq ft installed. Granite is slightly cheaper but has natural variation and requires annual sealing. Marble is beautiful but porous and stains with turmeric and oil — we advise against it for daily-use cooking surfaces. We spec the countertop edge profile, sink cutout, and drain board position in the render before ordering.
Cabinet Material and Thickness
BWR (boiling water resistant) plywood at 18mm is the minimum specification for carcasses. HDHMR (high-density homogeneous) is the premium upgrade — denser, smoother, and handles moisture better. MDF is acceptable for dry areas only, not near sinks or dishwashers. We specify thickness and material grade in writing and verify at site before the fabricator begins. Modular carcass thickness below 15mm is a red flag in any kitchen quote.
Lighting in the Kitchen
Most Pune kitchens have a single ceiling light. A designed kitchen has three light sources: general overhead (for the room), under-cabinet LED strips (for the counter work surface), and a pendant or track light over the island or dining area if adjacent. Under-cabinet LED strips cost ₹8K–₹20K installed and eliminate the counter shadow that makes cooking in a well-lit room frustrating.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a modular kitchen cost in Pune?+
A standard L-shaped modular kitchen in Pune costs ₹2.8L–₹5.5L at mid-range with Hettich hardware and a quartz countertop. A straight kitchen costs ₹1.8L–₹3.5L. A parallel or U-shaped kitchen for a larger flat costs ₹4.5L–₹9L+. The biggest cost drivers are hardware brand, shutter material, and countertop type. See our kitchen cost breakdown at /kitchen-interior-design-pune.
Modular kitchen vs carpenter-made — which is better?+
Modular wins on finish quality, timeline, and warranty. A good modular kitchen from a factory-made carcass with Hettich hardware is more consistent and more durable than most carpenter work at the same price. Carpenter-made makes sense only for very custom shapes, unusual heights, or when integrating with existing stonework. See our detailed comparison at /blog/modular-kitchen-vs-carpenter-pune.
Do you do a 3D render before the kitchen is ordered?+
Yes — always. We produce a detailed 3D render of the kitchen showing exact shutter colour, countertop material, hardware, and appliance positions before the fabricator receives a single measurement. This is the single most important step in a kitchen project. Changes after fabrication begins cost 3–5x more than changes in the render.
How long does a modular kitchen take to install?+
A modular kitchen takes 4–6 weeks from final measurement to delivery and installation. The civil work — tiling, electrical points, plumbing — must be complete before the modules arrive. Ali Asgar Shabbir (Principal Designer) coordinates this sequence as part of the project timeline to avoid delays.
